Getting Tattooed by Blackwood - Things to Know
How do I get tattooed by you?
To begin the process you should first review my PORTFOLIO to get an idea for my styles of tattoos. Once you decide on the style of tattoo, click on the CONTACT page and fill out the consult form. Please be very thorough in your description.
From there, your form will be reviewed and I will communicate with you via email. It may take several days for me to respond, so please be patient.
Do you do in-person consultations?
No. Please fill out an online consultation form thoroughly. I will respond via email, asking any questions I may have to further understand your project. This saves us both time, and provides me with a written record of what you're looking for in a tattoo. In the end, we both benefit.
Do you take walk-ins?
No. I am an appointment-only artist. You can schedule your appointment by filling out the consult form on the CONTACT page.
When is your availability? When can I get in?
I do one tattoo a day, 4 days a week (Wednesday-Saturday). So, approximately 200 tattoos a year. I choose to book 2-3 months out at a time to keep artwork in order and allow current clients with large projects the ability to have first pick at dates. So, if you're looking for something next year, please wait to send me a consult form until closer to that time frame.
Do I have to fill out a consultation form?
Yes, it will answer many of the initial questions I will have for you and will help get you the tattoo that you want.
Can I see my artwork before my appointment?
Most of my artwork is done in-person, with you on the day of your appointment. We will collaborate on the design, together, and design the piece alongside one another. I do this so that you can make any changes to the design right then and there. You get to be 100% satisfied with your voice being heard, and there is no external influence to getting your design exactly as you want it.
Some people may need to see "sketches" of their tattoo before their appointment and are very particular about getting their artwork in advance. If this is the case, respectfully, I may not be the best artist for you.
What kind of tattoos do you love to tattoo?
I prefer to tattoo animals, flowers, skulls, creepy portraits, anatomical hearts, mirrors, and things from movies. My favorite designs include morphs between human and animal faces, collages of horror movie films, and large-scale pieces (sleeves, back pieces, full body suits) on fresh skin.
What kind of tattoos don't you do?
I only take on work that I feel I will enjoy, and ideas that inspire me. The more creative freedom the better. I really love tattooing a mix of full color and/or black and grey hyper-realism. I love tattooing space and galaxy design elements as background of my designs. Check out my DESIGNS I would like to do. Some are offered at special rates.
Before submitting a consult form, please review my "No" list.
What if you are not the best artist for my project?
There are many talented artists that also work at A Dead Anchor Tattoo. If I think that your project could be better handled by another artist here, you will receive a direct referral to them. Be sure to check out my artist and friend, Tyranicorn, who specializes in neo-traditional and watercolor tattoos.
I'm new to getting tattooed by you. What do I need to know?
The first session will always take the longest. We will finalize the artwork, size out the stencil, and do most of the shading in the first sit. Expect to be here no less than 6 hours.
What are your rates?
I will work with your budget and space allotted. Keep in mind, tattoos are done in several sessions, approximately 4hrs for a half day sit. CASH ONLY PLEASE!

Tattoo Session Tips and Tricks
Do tattoos hurt?
Nope.
Where are you located?
I am the owner of A Dead Anchor Tattoo, located at 1925 Monroe St. Suite L10, between the zoo and UW campus. Our shop is inside the building, downstairs. You can follow the signs in the hallway to get here.
What things should I bring for my appointment?
Snacks, a sealed beverage, pillow, blanket, headphones for music, book, and proper clothing for the area getting tattooed (shorts, swim suit, robe, or tank top). We also offer a privacy curtain or covers. Please ask at the time of your tattoo. 👍🏻
What happens at my first tattoo session (forearm, upper arm, calf, etc.)?
We will sit together and build your tattoo design, refine any details, and size it to your body. Once we have it sized, we will lay a stencil and let it sit and soak into your skin while I finish setting up my station. Don't be surprised if it's 2pm, or later before we actually start tattooing, even if your appointment was booked at 12:30pm.
What happens at my first tattoo session (sleeves, bodysuits, back pieces, etc.)?
Large scale projects require a longer artwork time period before we can start tattooing. We will have to build most of your sleeve prior to starting one section. Your artwork may take upwards of 4-5 hours before we start tattooing. Once we have pieces planned, we will lay a stencil, it will need time to sit before we start tattooing, then we can get to work. You may only get a very small section of your tattoo done within the first sit. However, future sits will be much faster.
How fast can I finish my tattoo?
Tattoos can be completed in 2-day, back to back sits, or they will need a minimum of 1 month's heal time between sessions.
How will I know who you are when I come in for my appointment? There are no pictures of you... like, anywhere?!
You won't, lol. :) I will be the one waving at you. 👋

Tattoo Aftercare

Tattoo Touch Ups Policy
After your tattoo is healed, contact your artist with any questions regarding a touch up. If a touch up is needed there is no charge within the first 6 months of receiving a tattoo. NOT ALL TATTOOS NEED A TOUCH UP. A touch up is NOT a color "refresh," additions or changes to your existing tattoo, recoloring your piece, adding a new tattoo on top of or next to your existing piece, making black "blacker" or white "whiter" in your tattoo. If your new tattoo has been severely damaged (by yourself, your child, your line of work, a pet, risky behaviors, cuts/scrapes, etc.) you may not be entitled to a free touch up.
Reasons you may need a touch up include:
Our studio is sponsored by InkAura, and we recommend using their products for the aftercare process. InkAura products can be purchased from EpiQue Tattoo Supply.
- Leave the wrap on for 3-5 days, as directed by your tattoo artist.
- Make sure your hands are cleaned thoroughly before removing the bandage and cleaning your tattoo.
- If redness occurs outside of the tattoo bandage, take the bandage off immediately and discontinue use.
- Remove the bandage in the shower or over a sink. Peel a corner of the bandage back SLOWLY. Stretch the bandage diagonally with the skin (like a command strip). TAKE YOUR TIME. Do not rip it off quickly.
- Once the bandage is removed, clean and wash the tattoo and surrounding area with antibacterial unscented soap and water. Use just your fingers to clean the area (no loofas or wash cloths). Rinse the tattoo and surrounding area with cool water. Keep your tattoo out of the direct spray of the shower head or faucet.
- Before applying any aftercare, allow the tattoo to air dry for 3-5 minutes, then dab the excess residue with a clean, wet paper towel. Then, pat your tattoo dry with a clean dry paper towel. Be CAREFUL not to rub the tattoo.
- If you needed to take off the bandage before the 3-5 day mark:
- Apply a thin coat of tattoo balm (InkAura) or antibacterial ointment (Aquaphor, Bacitracin, A&D) to the tattoo. Dab off any excess ointment. You should NOT look overly shiny or goopy (thin layer like Chapstick).
- Clean and apply a new coat of tattoo balm or ointment 3-4 times a day for the next 3-4 days.
- If you got all 3-5 days of heal time with your bandage:
- Apply an unscented lotion (InkAura, Lubriderm, Jergens, Eucerin) to the tattoo.
- Clean the tattoo and surrounding area with soap and water 3-4 times a day for the first 3-4 days that the bandage is off.
- Apply lotion 6-8 times per day (approximately every 1-2 hours). The lotion should be applied at least 2 times before the next cleaning.
- Apply lotion to your tattoo regularly for the next 2 weeks. Keep your tattoo clean and moisturized.
- During the healing process, your tattoo will peal or flake, similar to a sunburn. DO NOT pick, itch, or scratch at these flakes. When you clean your tattoo, some of these flakes will come off.
- Wear loose fitting clothing around the tattooed area to reduce the amount of times the tattoo is rubbed against.
- Tattoos generally take 14 days to heal on the outer skin, and 6-8 weeks to heal entirely. This varies from person to person and from tattoo to tattoo.
- If you still have concerns about what to do, please email your artist! We are here to help!
What happens if I get an ink sack?
- Most ink sacks are normal. You are healing in your own plasma, so it's to be expected that you will have some bodily fluids sloshing around under your bandage. It will not harm your tattoo.
- You should only be concerned about an ink sack if it leaking or about to burst. If your ink sack does not look like it will make it another day/night, please contact us via email with a photo of the tattoo/bandage.

Reasons you may need a touch up include:
- A portion of your tattoo's linework is faded or inconsistent.
- The color in your tattoo looks washed out or "patchy."
- Your tattoo scabbed over and is missing a spot where the ink used to be.
- A follow-up appointment was requested by your tattoo artist.
